My child loves milkshakes. She has her favorites like vanilla, strawberry and raspberry. I usually use a blender to mix the fruit with the milk using only the juice and leaving most of the pulp and seeds behind.
Sometimes though, you just don't have a blender, or you have one but it's broken. Or you just don't have the time to take the blender from the case, then clean it and dry it and... you know, sometimes you need a fast way of doing things most of the times the answer is not an appliance.
Why are we using just 1/10 of a banana in this recipe? Kids have a lot more active taste buds than adults do. The sense of smell is also different. In order to avoid overloading taste when preparing food for a kid you need to take that into account. So, in order for a kid to enjoy a banana milkshake you really need to avoid over saturating the milk with banana flavor. If you're an adult and you're crazy about bananas you might use one banana for a milkshake of 250ml but from my experience you need to turn down the flavors a notch for kids to enjoy this. This recipe gives you a creamy and very soft banana milkshake.
200ml of cold semi-skimmed milk (I prefer whole milk but usually it's not a bad idea to cut on the fat. The skimmed milk will do just fine).
1 ice cube.
2,5 teaspoons of sugar (use white granulated sugar).
1/10 of a banana (choose your preferred type).
A mortar or a plate and a fork
A small strainer
A cup with an hermetic lid or a shaker if you have one.
A tall glass.
A straw.
Optional: 2 spearmint leafs.
1. Cut about 1/10 of a banana. Peel the piece of banana.
2. Put it in the mortar. Add one teaspoon of sugar. Crush and smash it until liquid.
3. Strain the banana puree into your shaker. Add the remaining sugar (1,5 teaspoons) and the ice cube.
4. Close the cup with the lid. Shake vigorously for about 15 seconds.
5. Pour the banana milkshake into a tall glass.
If your child doesn't run away from green stuff you can spread a washed and minced peppermint leaf on the foam and decorate with some more leafs. Just take the spearmint out of the fridge 5 minutes before using it. Use a straw to drink.
Note: do not prepare the milkshake with minced peppermint. The ingredients are too cold for the spearmint flavor to come out and mix with the milk. Besides, it wouldn't be that pleasant to have pieces of spearmint obstructing your straw. If you mince a leaf and let it be on top of the shake the aroma will have its effect. That's a promise.
